DORIS BATTLE
(1918-1970)

Bette Denlinger says,

"Let me contribute a memorial to one of the unsung heroes, one of those non-organization focused people who never became famous but supported professional astrology with memberships in everything from the AFA to studies with The Church of Light to contributions to the Theosophical Society, someone who took Ethics, with a capital E, seriously, and touched the lives of many people.

"There were several professional astrologers who owed their interest in astrology and inspiration to Doris Battle. However, it is the non-astrologers who received her guidance and who will probably never see this page, who benefited most from knowing her. She exemplified the high ideals of Uranus in Aquarius in many ways.

"In December, 1954, Doris became the first American woman to be certified by the Faculty of Astrological Studies headed by Margaret Hone and founded under the auspices of the Astrological Lodge of London. This was, for the times, a radical undertaking--a brand new and prestigious correspondence course that crossed the ocean with personal handwritten instruction from Margaret Hone and Jeffrey Mayo. So here is a little cheer for the true pioneers who forged ahead before computers, calculators, or word processors, and fought prejudice and ignorance to promote high standards in astrology."

Astrological Pioneers of America notes that she joined the AFA in 1955 and was a member until her death.

Doris' daughter adds, "We lived using astrology--all cars were purchased with electional charts, and we never had a bit of trouble with them. My sister's marriage was planned with astrology, and that has lasted 35 years. She recorded every event in the sidebars of ephemerides. No date or friend entering our house escaped without giving their birthdata, which wasn't fun for a teenager, believe me!"

BIRTHDATA: Doris' daughter writes, "She was born April 15, 1918, at 9:00 AM CST in Bartlesville, OK, 95W58, 36N44, from her own notes. As I remember her birthtime was not recorded and she was never sure of the birthtime, but this is the chart she used. She died November 11, 1970, in Aransas Pass, TX."
