MARY BELL![]() Barbara Blackie writes for this memorial, "I was browsing through one of my favorite rare and out-of-print book places one day and found a remarkable item. It is a volume of horoscopes compiled in San Francisco during the 20's and 30's by an early astrologer named Mary Elizabeth Cooke Bell. "An article from the San Francisco Call Bulletin dated November 26, 1913, pasted in the back of the journal describes her as 'vice president of the Juvenile Protective association, Secretary for the California Society for Exceptional Children, and one of the best known psychologists in the city'. Some of her comments make it obvious that she was also an early feminist! "It looks like she might have been to Russia (there's a photo of a very handsome Russian) and may have been the Mary Bell who worked with Gurdjieff." Birth and Death Information: Mary Bell was born on December 25, 1860, at 9:15 AM in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is listed in AstroDatabank under the Pioneers of Astrology Database. Data rated A. An old clipping provided by the San Francisco Historical Society says, "Mary Cooke Bell Expires at San Jose (July 29, 1933) Mrs. Mary Cooke Bell, 72, well known in Juvenile Court circles in San Francisco, died last night at a private sanatorium near San Jose, according to Associated Press dispatches. Well known as an astrologer, she was Chief Yeomanette at Yerba Buena Island during the World war. She was also credited with having organized the first girl juvenile delinquent supervision system in San Francisco. She was a member of Elizabeth Lee Post, American Legion Auxiliary, of San Francisco."Memorials A-K, Continued DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD? This memorial is interactive, and we welcome
