TRIBUTES

I’ve been a fan of Rockie Horoscope since I first discovered L.A. Weekly in 1995, and ever since, I've never missed a week. Although I cherished her wit and writing style, it was her clear-cut, accurate astrology that kept me coming back. In a field full of quacks and vague, euphemistic writing, Rockie's straightforward text stood out, giving information you could really use. Like street signs that point you out of an unfamiliar neighborhood, her column pointed me in the right direction on days I needed a little help. Now where will I go to find out when Mercury goes retro?

Wisdom and insight dispensed with wit and style — for years I’ve started the day with my morning coffee and Rockie. I do believe her advice has kept me out of trouble more than once!

Every Friday night my friends and I get together to eat, drink and assess the progress or damage we have inflicted on the world over the past week. After dessert we always read Rockie’s horoscope, and it usually is scarily prescient or at least very funny. We will truly miss this ritual (10 years-plus?), and Rockie's insight and wisdom.

Rockie Horoscope has been an inspiration and will be missed. Her wit, personality and excellence are a testament to what the art of astrology can be. All of us have been lucky for the time and tallent she shared with us.

Rockie wil be greatly missed! She was the one astrologist I identified with for her incredible insight, humour, sarcasm, and 'fierce' intellect - no kidding! She was amazing! More than that, I really felt a bond with her - even though we had never met or spoken. She was my connection to the planets, the stars, somewhere over the rainbow. I always felt reassured that Rockie was out there, looking out for us! I always looked forward to reading her column. Now, there is a great lacuna in the Force, in the realm of human progress, and in my Cleveland 'Scene'! I feel like I have lost my best friend. Where will I go for advice?! Godspeed, Rockie!!!

Since back in the mid 80's I would chase down the latest copy of the weekly religiously just so I could read my favorite horoscope from my favorite Astrologer. What a blessing the WWW became as I could read her column everyday online. She was almost always my second click and often my first. Would have loved to have met her....We will miss you Rockie.

Comment by Tommy from LA on Nov 5th, 2008, 19:13 pm

Rockie meant so much to me for as long as I can remember! I met her once at a seminar that she gave in Encino I believe. This was in the 80's. In 1998 I relocated to Ventura County and never could find the Weekly and missed her writing. I am so old school that I never read stuff online until one day I found Rockie again. I read her nearly all of the time! Sometimes however you have bouts of non computer mindedness. I just logged in Tuesday to see what genius thoughts she had prior to our election only to find that Rockie had left the building! I was like losing a dear dear old friend and mentor! All i can say is I will miss her so very much and I am sure that her soul is headed right where it was meant to be! I am so very glad that sometime in the past year I had a strong yearning to write her a card and send it to her business address telling her what a Mitzvah she was to my life. I am certain that she knew how she was loved by her readers. GOD BLESS YOU ROCKIE!

I've been reading Rockie Horoscope in print or online for over a decade (nearly two) and only realize now what an impact she has had. I hope she enjoyed the life she was given. Sincere condolances to her loved ones and sympathy to those who enjoyed her work so much who will also feel her absence.

For many years now, Rockie Horoscope was the best thing about Thursdays.
Rockie Gardiner was a cultural landmark in Los Angeles, and her column one of my favorites at the LAWeekly. To say she will be missed is a huge understatement. She is missed already.
Rest in peace, Rockie. I'm sure you're already doing progressed charts for all the saints.

I left LA in 2000, but would 'visit' every week to check Rockie's insight and wit. She was one of my strongest remaining connections to the City of Angels.

Om Mani Padme Hum
Rockie drew me to see the larger cycles and gravitational pulls of the lights. In the early nineties, sensing some big shifts were coming, I followed Rockie and learned to read an ephemeris. Neptune and Uranus were conjunct in Capricorn. I will always consider her my mentor.

Rockie in my opinion was a high Priestess , a prophet, a master of astrology and the most eloquent astrologer of our era. I myself who is well versed in astrology, the 1st science on Earth, found the deepest insight of the stars through Rockie's intelligent, humorous, modern and always correct analysis of the planets' effect upon us. My heart sank today upon reading these very sad news. I have been religiously reading her forecasts for the last 15 years. I will miss her terribly. I feel like we lost a living Angel who guided us with such accuracy and love.
How magical and a-propos that she passed at 11:11 and on a 13. For those of you who know numerology and the meaning of 11:11, this confirms that she was a living legend, a Goddess and a bonafide Avatar. I feel like I lost a member of my family. May she be remembered forever and her soul rest in Peace. Om

I didn't know much about Rockie, but I always thought the horoscopes were very well done and thought provoking. I already miss Rockie and her immense astrological talents. Not to take anything away from the rest of L.A. Weekly, the great newspaper that I've been reading since the eighties, and since moving from L.A. have continued to read online, but it just won't be the same anymore. I am truly grateful for all of the insights that were to be found in Rockie Horoscope over the years and the help it provided my attempts to figure out how the stars and planets might influence my own corner of the universe. Thanks, Rockie!

Dear Lady,
you will be missed! I am sure, you knew how many of us looked to your inspiring words, weekly.
I for one, thank you from my heart, as it was your astrological insight that helped me develop my own gifts, and move from the corporate world, to the metaphysical world. I am now a full time practicing astrologer /metaphysician. For this, and so much more, I thank you. May your journey be a peaceful and joyous one, as you well deserve to be rewarded for what you gave, to so many.
Respectfully, Maya

The only reason I used to read the LA Weekly when it first came out was for Rockie's column. She was magical, mystical and always right on the money. Hers was the best astrology column in the US for very long time.
Just a few hours ago I went to look for her column for last week and thought, "That's odd, no Rockie ...hmmm I wonder why?" and then I got this message.
WOW...no more Rockie. Condolences to her family -- she must've been quite a human being to have her humor shine so well thru her writing to make complete strangers feel she was a friend, and knew them so well. I know I did, and I can see for the comments from other readers they did, too.

Many years ago I attended a Skirball Centre
event where I met Rockie Gardiner. She was gracious and I so enjoyed her column over the years in LA Weekly, Rockie was such an eloquent writer and great Astrologer, and she will be sadly missed, however I know whenever we gaze up at the stars at night, we will notice one special one, belonging to our Rockie.

RIP dear Rockie,
My constant friend, whom I never met. No one turned a phrase, quite like you. I counted upon your brilliant, insightful, beautifully written astrological account each day. There was no hint that my era of blissfully enlightened days were numbered. I'm shocked into reality to find that I counted on you. I never knew it until you were no longer able. So sad that you have been silenced. Blessings and condolences to your family. No doubt, you are soaking up atmosphere and astrological insight. Namaste, mp

Farewell not only to my favorite but my only astrologer...
my "must-read" every week. Even if I forgot what it said by the next day, Rockie provided an old-school, metaphysical "hug" every week, and often the only thing I read in the LA WEEKLY when personal and world conditions were especially glum. Until today I didn't even know anything more personal about "Rockie" than what was in the horoscope for the day or week because the intelligent, rock n'roll energy in the words transcended the mundane for the bigger, always positive picture.
Rockie will be so missed in L.A.'s high energy center place in the universe, the only comfort being that her spirit is wafting "out there" in a peaceful place overlooking it all. My condolences to Jeremy.

I had the good fortune of seeing Rockie speak at an event at the Egyptian back in the '90's. During the intermission, I was honored that she chose to kick up her heels in a seat next to me. Though we simply had a casual conversation, her intelligence, wisdom, candor, and sociability charmed me to no end. Her horoscopes were always my favorite. She laid out the transits and aspects for us with such a smart sense of humor and a wonderful lack of the bullshit you get in most horoscopes.
She was indisputably a defining voice of Los Angeles.
Though I will terribly miss hearing that voice, I shall never forget it.
Thank you, Rockie, for the weeks and weeks and weeks of wisdom you gave to us.

I was sadly stunned to learn that Rockie Gardiner made her transition last Friday. Even though I have returned to my native Chicago, I became a huge fan of Rockie's during the ten years that I lived in Los Angeles, 1992-2002. Since then, I have ritually read her column on line every week. It's something that I always look forward to and her insight into the astrological world and witty writing style will truly be missed.

For twenty-five years I have been planning every big event in my life with Rockie, and she never let me down. What a gift she was to all who read her, and how much we will all miss her. I can feel her up in the either with a secpter in her hand. No more deadlines to keep, your words and vibe will never be replaced. Thank-You for all you gave. I wish you family well in this hard and sad tranisition from not having you close by to touch and talk to. But in our hearts you will forever be, I didn't know you but I loved you just the same. GODSPEED!!

Wow. As the son of an astrologer I've been reading Rockie's weekly ever since I moved to LA in March of 1984. It took me about 2 years just to figure out what the hell she was talking about! But the column itself somehow trained me in astrology.
Ultimately I preferred reading Rockie's "weekly general" over my own mother's specific version through the "mom filter". Rockie 'said it like it was' and I - like all of you readihng this - felt an incredible connection to her column.
What on earth are we going to do without it? We'll miss you Rockie. What a legend. As a Pisces with the Saturn/Uranus thing happening, this was the last 'significant other' I thought I would lose this week...
See you at Boardners.
Kindly,
Kelly Nelson

Rocky was a great astrologer. She wrote in a style that made it interesting for all. The professional astrologer got her " in" jokes and she raised the bar for those that weren't fluent in "astro- babble" as we professionals call it. She made astrology fun, factual and nailed accurate predictions!
I have read her everyday since I moved to Los Angeles in 1988.
As a matter of fact- the ENTIRE reason I would pick up a Weekly ( pre-online days) was to read her column. I torn out her New Year's Eve predictions and taped them to the freg.
She was / is a STAR that will always shine bright.
Forever loved- forever missed.

Rockie:
You're so missed already here in Oakland, CA.
I've been following your advice ever since you were in the East Bay Express, and then the LA Weekly.
I have always loved the fact that you gave a balanced perspective, and were kind to Capricorn's, as not every astrologer is, pawning us off as negative, ambitious, money lovers. Not so, but you knew that!
I just want to thank you, wherever you are, and hope you're reconnected with your soulmate!
XOXO

I was shocked when I looked for her column last Monday and read the news ... how very strange. A world without Rockie. I was so lucky to have met her once about 10 years ago when she actually did my chart ... but I've been her faithful fan since the beginning, way back in the early 80s. I feel a real loss. There is no one like Rockie: her wit, her insight. I will miss her ... isn't it just like her to pass over on Halloween! I love you, Rockie !!!

wow! WHAT A LOSS.I lived my life by her column. I read it daily at first to learn where the Moon was and what it was doing. Then she became my religion! I went on to learn astrology and will study it for the rest of my lives. She did a personal reading for me about 15years ago and was magnificent in person. SO COOL! WHO ON THIS PLANET can replace her? HELP! I'm losing my religion. Condolences to her huge family-her own and all of her devoted disciples.

found you in hardcopy (The Weekly) when i lived in LA., and have been looking to your column everyday since. it's been for well over 10 years now, even when i was living in asia, it was like seeing a friend from home. you felt like a soul-sister as i was also a Sag from NY state and like/love sports. your horoscopes were so thoughtful and entertaining to boot. i heeded the moon void notices in your dailies. oh the world is a little more lonely without you here, but i will always remember you. my sympathies to your son/family/friends.

My jaw hit the floor when I read about the passing of Rockie this week. She will be (and is already) missed by her friends and readers. I was so happy when I discovered her column online years ago, as I had found someone who wrote horoscopes that actually incorporated the planetary aspects. Things have changed since then and there are more astrologers out there doing it. But there will never be another "Rockie".

Rockie provided insights during some of the most troubling periods of my life. Often times it was difficult to understand her forecasts because of the true intensity they were written in which left me on my own to figure the week ahead out. This only made me read her column with greater devotion and over time I gained tremendous insight as to the purposes of the planets and how we were affected by them. In addition to reading my own forecast, I read and tried to make sense of all the others as well so that I could have a greater understanding how I figured into the whole crazy mix. By doing this it also helped me to understand who and what may need to be avoided/enjoyed during the coming week(s).I will truly miss her help. She left such a mark on my life and I am already at a loss. However, wherever she is she is still with me, guiding and helping those who were avid devotees.
Thank You Rockie.

Rockie:
I met you in 1981 when you gave me a 2 hour reading of insight into my life past, present and future. It was an afternoon I have never forgotten, since you were so "right on" about me, and my past at the time. Now, 27 years later, the majority of your insights and predictions have materialized and are still unfolding. I have been blessed my entire 62 years of life of being very intuitive and psychic for others, as you pointed out in the reading, but had trouble of seeing for myself at times. When I moved from LA over 10 years ago, I was still able to keep in touch with you every week through your column and you helped me to continually look back at myself from a vivid and to the point perspective.
You told me in the not too distant past that I would soon be "going it alone", now I truly know what you meant. You may not be in reality with us that are, but your presence is very much still here and will remain.
I along with your family and hundreds of thousands of friends, will shed a tear and greatly miss you physically, but we will not "go it alone", because we know you are still here with us.
Thank you for being in my life............

Rockie's column has been my homepage for the past 10 years after moving from the LA area where I was always anxious to pick up the latest paper edition. I was curious why there wasn't a new column for several days but just thought Rockie was out soaking up cosmic vibes a little longer than usual only to learn she had actually joined the stars & at 11:11 on Samhain - how apropos. A long time student of astrology, I was always amazed with her uncanny accuracy & her delightfully blunt Sadge humor was the best ! To say she'll be missed is a huge understatement. It's always painful when family & friends depart but as another aptly stated, it's a very strange feeling to lose a friend you never met. Hope there will be an article after the memorial for those of us who can't attend & how kind of the family to have a public one. Thanks too for posting her background info. Many blessings Rockie & to your family & friends. Farewell with much love from another avid stargazer who will never forget you.

I really, really, really connected with Ms. Rocky Gardiner.I first discovered her uncanny, cerebral connections and abilities at decifering the astrological interactions and her ability to apply this information to each and every human being, so appropriately, with relevance, so advisory with on the money caveats. I first discovered her column in our City Paper. Considering my self an astological buff, her columns rocked my world sufficiently. So much so, to miss one would leave me almost emotionally unstable. In addition to the intricate report she provided for me, she also gave a scrutiny into others, if you knew their, sun, moon and ascendant signs which would enable one to go forward that week armed with insights about co-workers, bosses, lovers, etc.and assist your discussions, plans and actions. She validated the use and value of astrology unlike any other astrolger other than Patrick who wrote for the New York Post and had passed on many years ago.Thank you for the insight into her life. I am devastated & lost but spiritual. I must face the future without her insights which enhanced my ability to communicate, plan, decide and interact with others.Learning of her passing made me weak in the knees. A feeling I experienced when my mother died. It is a loss that leaves me without guidance and insight on how to behave. Sally Brompton, an astrologer with New York Post is her closest comparison but limited in many ways. So, my journey is now stunted from day to day and I am filled with wonder and anxiety when I contemplate where do I go from here?

Wisdom and insight dispensed with wit and style - for years I’ve started the day with my morning coffee and Rockie. I’ve not seen any others who write a daily column that sorts out the major influences for all of us (not just by sun sign) - and I do believe her advice has kept me out of trouble more than once!
I'm just now beginning to realize how much I learned about astrology over the many years I read Rockie's columns. At first I didn't understand a lot of what she wrote, but I kept reading, and the concepts just sort of sank in gradually, thanks to her mix of traditional and original, modern, highly descriptive keywords. I spent most of yesterday reading/studying astrology. Now that Rockie is gone, I want to understand it better because I can’t lean on her anymore.
Down-to-earth writing about the heavens is in very short supply. I really miss Rockie already - my condolences to all of you who were close to her - such a loss. Thank you, Rockie, for all you have given us!

The one week I miss the column, I come back to Rockie's obituary.
I've been a fan of Rockie Horoscope since I first discovered LA Weekly in 1995, and ever since, I've never missed a week; either tracking the last paper down in my neighborhood or hunting it down online, waiting patiently in the Eastern time zone for the daily forecast to be posted. And now I'm feeling a distinct loss. "It's just a column!" I keep telling myself. But really, it was so much more.
Although I cherished her wit and writing style, it was her clear-cut, accurate astrology that kept me coming back. In a field full of quacks and vague euphemistic writing, Rockie's straightforward text stood out, giving information you could really use. Like street signs that point you out of an unfamiliar neighborhood, her column pointed me in the right direction on days I needed a little help. Not to mention all those SuperBowls she predicted so accurately! Now where will I go to find out when Mercury goes retro?
I was lucky enough to meet Ms. Gardiner once, in Malibu. I was pleased to see she was just the same in person as she was in print. I've often wished I could've afforded a longer, proper reading.
So, rest in peace, Rockie. I'll miss your memorial but you'll always be remembered.

I'm so saddened to learn of Rockies passing. I've followed her column and her insight for years and no one else has gotten it better. She was the best reason to pick up the "Weekly". I've had her personal horoscope projection several times and it was always right on. I'll miss her advice and insight. I look forward to seeing her the next time around. Peace and blessings Rockie.

I found Rockie's column during a challenging period in my life. I had just moved to Maryland, away from family and needed to find balance for life in the Washington, DC bubble.
I have followed Rockie's column since 1984 - and quite honestly, I feel her insights and interpretations were guiding light for me.
My sincere condolences and my admiration for her life well-lived.

Dear Rockie,
Thanks for all of your insight and humor. You've helped me to understand myself a lot better and our universe of relationships, too.
G-d bless you.

Dear Rockie,
Shoulda' known all along you were a New Yorker!!
Congratulations on your commencement. I hope your hubby and family met you when you arrived.
You held the flashlight for me for a long time, I guess I'll have to take it from here. You will be missed.
You done good,
Your pal, Furby

I feel as though I've lost a dear friend. The comfort is that she is back with her husband and soul mate. She will be greatly missed by many.

I followed a link from Rob Brezny's column, Freewill Astrology, to Rockie's column years ago, and have been hooked ever since. Every day, especially Thursday, I'd check Rockie's words of wisdom. Sincere condolences to her family, friends, Kitty. I have a (surprisingly) big void in my day without her insights.

I am shocked to learn Rockie has left the movie of life. Will miss her dearly. Have been reading her horoscopes since her arrival to the LA Weekly in the 80's. She was the MOST reliable astrological source that I can think of. I will particularly miss her head's up on Mercury Retrogrades. I know they can be found elsewhere, but Rockie always had a unique take on what any aspect might portend. Rest in peace, Rockie! The City of Angels will miss you.

Sad news. I have been reading her column every day for years, and will greatly miss her insightful writing.

She was the best ever! I'm shocked that she disappeared so suddenly from our lives.I 've depended on her for the last 6 years for her unique perspective.(I'm an astrologer and trained psychotherapist , but I still needed her input .!)
Rocki Gardiner's voice will be sorely missed by many. Thank you for carrying her column for so long.

I have slavishly read Rockie's column since the early 1980's, as a resident of Silverlake, Los Angeles, and later, Long Beach, and a reader of the LAWeekly. I always found something witty, something wise, and something fantastic there, satisfying all my needs... to predict the universe, to "guide" my petty little existence in coherent fashion with its movements...And when I moved out of loco Southern California, I was ecstatic to follow her DAILY on-line. She will be greatly missed, and hopefully some of the words of those of us not able to attend her memorial will be read there.
I would be honored if mine were included.

No! I want Rockie to come back. How will I know when to call in sick to work (moon voids!)? Her forecasts were something I checked devotedly for a long time. Is there anyone comparable?
...and she left when the veil was thinnest...

If she left weekly forecasts, where are they?!
Don't deny us the last bits of her knowledge.

It's interesting how emotionally affected we can be by the passing of someone we didn't really know. When the someone in question is capable of striking this type of chord, we know the power of her words and work have touched us and we will miss the wisdom contained therewithin.

Dear Jeremy and those who were fortunate to live close to Madam Rochelle,
The lady was so accurate in her forcasts that there was no way, we could miss them or even delay reading them past morning. Her guidance was very valuable for us. I offer my heartiest "Obeisance, thanks and love" to madam Rochelle. She was a great lady and will remain so in our hearts. I pray to Almighty to give her soul peace and keep her close to His holy feet.

IN MEMORIUM
I too am an ex-pat that revisited LA for a few moments online every day for the past 2 years when I plugged into Rockie's vibes on the laweekly website. Most of my 20 years In LA were informed by Ms. Rockie, and I always wondered about her, how she got her name, and about her life - especially that rumor that she knew Jim Morrison.
But mostly, I learned at her knee. Rockie didn't just give a horoscope, she discussed the movement of the planets in a way that made astrology both understandable and compelling. I too will always consider her a mentor, and though I still have much more to learn, I learned a lot under Rockie's watch.
Rockie seemed like a presence that would be eternal, something that is just "always there for you" - as inevitable as morning coffee. That is why so many of us were somewhat shocked to find out she was, indeed, mortal after all. 11:11 on Samhain - you've got to believe she chose her time, like a great astrologer would.
No one can fill your shoes Rockie, but I hope someone will continue your work at the laweekly. I won't be able to be at Boardners, as I'm in the Southern Hemisphere now, but I used to live 10 minutes away by cab, and so on Saturday I'll take the mental journey back there to say good by - someone knock back a drink for me, please, in Rockie's honor.
Rockie, after Saturday, we won't keep you any longer by wishing you were still here. Let your spirit lift high and swiftly through your beloved stars and beyond, propelled by our prayers and deeply profound good wishes, powered by all the love you generated in your magical season here on Gaia.

I remember one of my Rockie Horoscopes very clearly. It made a reference to one of my all time favorite tv shows and the horoscope rang eerily true for me that day. i clipped it out and carried it with me for years until I lost it somewhere along the way :( I always loved reading them and will miss Rockie!!

Comment by Nicole from Phoenix on Nov 12th, 2008, 17:04 pm

Wow! I was stunned to learn of Rockie's demise...I didn't even know she was sick...I was further stunned to read her eulogy here on LAWeekly, and to find out she was a fellow Sadge AND fellow Syracusan...no wonder I was always compelled to read her column every week! I will miss her insights and interpretations of current events in connection with the cosmos. She was truly one special star! By writing this, I hope it confirms what you should've already known...she touched more people than you can imagine!
Godspeed Rockie, and thank you!

Dear Rockie, Thank you so much for your words of wisdom, day in, day out, week in ,week out, year in , year out for many years. You are truly missed. I looked forward to each week’s new column online. It was a roadmap with signs for potholes and glad tidings. My condolences to your family, friends, and fellow LA Weekly staffers. BTW, LAW, I was glad to see the archives although they are misaligned. I’m glad I kept mine. Thanks again and good wishes to all.

Rockie was a daily inspiration for years !
I had the luck to meet her while doing a movie about the Doors.
She was the original LA Woman,
and some friends told me the song of the same name
had been written by Jim Morrison about her !
Rockie, we will miss you all over the world,
so sad you could not make it tpo 2012 !!!
LOVE & Respect
