VIVIA JAYNE
(1923-1998)
The wife of Charles Jayne, Vivia was in her own right a fine and talented astrologer. She
was eclipsed by Charles' brilliance--as were we all! A student and client of Vivia's, Ann Cortese, was determined to seek out the information
on her passing and to make sure she had a tribute of her own.
Here is her report on the extensive research she did:
"Finally, and after much time and effort, I feel like the question
of Vivia Jayne's last days, which has been with me for two years, has been put to rest.
At long last she will get the credit she so richly deserves. Both she and her husband Charles were my teachers, and therefore I would like
to add what I knew of her.
"She was a very intelligent woman, a gracious
lady, more than a great support to her husband, and I had a sense that while
they worked together, her influence on his astrological work cannot be
measured. As a couple they worked to publish astrology books in their home
under the name of "Astrological Bureau" at 5 Quaker Hill Road, Monroe,
New York. The one Astrological Bureau publication still in print under Vivia's name alone is
Aspects to the Horoscope Angles. (Vivia was also Charles' co-author
in a years-long daily column for the New York Daily News.)
"In his book The Preface to Prenatal Charts, Charles says of Vivia,'I
wish to acknowledge the help given to me by my wife in all of this work, for
without her counsel and other vital forms of help none of it would have been
possible'.
"Linda Nades, a dear friend of hers from whom I got part of this information,
has told me that Vivia would want to be remembered as an artist or painter as
well as an astrologer. To quote Linda's words, 'Viv does live in
my heart.'
"Vivia displayed compassion in time of need and had a depth of understanding
that went far beyond the intellect. In my way, and in silent prayer, I pay tribute to her memory. Her
passing was indeed a loss to the Astrological Community."
BIRTH AND DEATH INFORMATION FROM ANN: "Vivia Jayne was
born in Lynbrook, New York, on June 23rd 1923, Time unknown.
Her father's name was Poppleton and her Mother's name was Ethel Frances
Edgars. After Charles died in 1985, Vivia continued living and
practicing astrology in Monroe. In August of 1998, she fell and broke
her hip and went into a nursing home. She developed pneumonia, was
hospitalized and passed away in November, 1998, in Arden Hill Hospital,
Goshen, Orange County, New York, at 12:05 PM."
