BESSIE LISPENARDBill Dugan suggested her name for this memorial and wrote, "I met Bessie Lispenard back in the 1960s and studied with her on a weekly basis of private lessons in her wood frame house on East 61st Street near the East River in New York City. I remember that house quite well because by that time there were so few of them left in Manhattan, especially on the upper East side. Each time I went for a lesson she greeted me at the door, nicely and modestly dressed and ushered me into her neat-as-a-pin parlor where a card table and two folding chairs were set up for the lesson. Bessie charged $10 a lesson and that included the written material she published as part of her mail order correspondence course. Bessie advertised her correspondence course for many years in the classified section of various periodicals. She showed me everything she knew about how to set up a chart and even shared some of her hard won knowledge of interpretation. " Bessie was a dedicated Rosicrucian, and at one time she was the head of the New York City chapter. When I met Bessie Lispenard, I was 22 years old and she was 88. Even at her advanced age, she was quite a lively and warm lady. I continued to see her over a period of several years until she was no longer able to get around town so easily. Her daughter was also a very fine astrologer who practiced in the New York area." Astrological Pioneers of America has no birth or death data, but notes that she was a member of the American Federation of Astrologers (MAFA) and was a member of the board of the Astrologers' Guild of America in the 1940s. She published several books: Astrological Basic Priniples, Part I and II; Astrological Signs; and Rectification. she is not listed in AstroDataBank.
