(1929-1997) ![]() Alphee Lavoie, in the NCGR Journal, Fall, 1997: "Whenever we lose a fellow astrologer, it is always a great loss. And when it is someone who was also a friend for 25 years, it is an even greater loss. Capel was both a colleague and a friend of mine. With his family surrounding him in love, he passed away on July 10, 1997, in his home, after a yearlong struggle with lung cancer. He was 68 years old.
"At Capel's memorial service, someone referred to him as a giant of a man who looked like Abraham Lincoln and had the voice of James Earl Jones. Despite his towering size and commanding voice, it was his love of people and his caring instincts that had such an impact on our astrological community. "His beginnings were that of an engineer in manufacturing, with a BS in engineering and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. He worked as plant manager until his spirit longed for more. He began his spiritual quest at the Theosophical Society becoming a lifetime member. This pursuit led him to astrology. "It wasn't long before Capel opened his chart service, The Astrological Bureau of Ideas, and about the same time he began his astrological counseling practice. In 1972, he was instrumental in forming The Astrological Society of Connecticut (ACS) and continued for 25 years to be an active participant and well-loved member. Through teaching classes, his frequent lectures, and his active participation in the Connecticut astrological community, Capel gave so much of himself. He was also a member of NCGR and the AFA. "In 1991, Capel received his Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Bridgeport, CT, and his license as a psychotherapist. The ASC is grateful for his contribution to astrology by being a front-runner in the wedding of astrology and psychology. As a professional in both fields, he gave new honor to astrology and helped earn it a greater respect. "Capel touched many lives. He was loved and revered by his
legion of family members, friends, and clients. He will be
missed by those who knew him. To continue his memory and loving
work, I will pass along the gentle words he always shared with us,
and send them to him now:
BIRTHDATA: AstroDatabank gives the following birth information, rated AA. He told Lois Rodden he was born on April 4, 1929, at 7:40 PM, in Pittsburgh, PA. He rectified the time to 7:42, based on events. He was survived by a wife and three children. A true Aries pioneer, Cap McCutcheon had the Sun, Mercury, and Uranus conjunct in his sixth house, showing him to be a brilliant innovator in his work. These planets were squared by Pluto and Mars conjunct in Cancer in the ninth, the mark of both a probing healer and a diligent researcher. His Moon was in Aquarius in the fourth, and he had Libra Rising. In June, 2000, Bill Meridian wrote, "I shall always recall Capel as a warm and loving man. He became interested in therapy at a time when I was enrolled with the Pathwork in Phoenica, NY. We both were coming from the place of being mental and were seeking to open the emotional sides of ourselves. We used to talk about the difficulties that we encountered along the way. Capel was very interested in linking the emotions and astrology. He always struck me as a very sincere person, the type which astrology needs."
I met Capel only once, somewhere back in the 70's. I found the reading he gave to be so insightful and educational that he has come to mind many times since. Today, sadly, I learned of his passing and would like to express my sentiment of how affected I was by simply sitting down and listening to his interpretation of my particular chart. Within a couple of hours I felt both befriended and enlightened by Capel's gifts. I am a better person for having met him. Thanks to you, Capel. Memorials L-Z, Continued DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD?
