Margaret Millard (Kathleen Margaret Agnete Harland) was a physician, astrologer, author and mother of six who successfully combined all areas in her life for over 50 years. She died on November 13, 2004 in Orono, ME at the age of 88 from Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Millard was born in the West Indies and moved to England to attend school when she was 12. Her father, who was a tropical biologist, interested her in both science and medicine from her earliest years. There was never any doubt in her mind that she would become a physician.

In 1940, while Dr. Millard was a medical student at Bristol University, she attended a lecture by Cyril Fagan in Dublin. In additional to her medical studies, she began to study with a theosophist in 1941. With her Uranus rising in Aquarius, Dr. Millard's life was to be led down many unexpected paths. She lived and worked in several countries, did volunteer medical work in Nepal, Nicaragua and India and wrote many articles in major astrological magazines and published three books.

Dr. Millard met her husband, Ben, while she was a medical student and they were married in 1943. The young couple spent World War II in Bristol. After the War, they both volunteered as reconstruction volunteers in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Then, Ben was offered a research post at Amherst College in Massachusetts and they left for America where they remained in New England for their entire careers.

The family's next move was to Windham, ME in 1958 when Ben was hired as a research chemist in Westbrook. Dr. Millard worked in general medicine for several years and then became board certified in first anesthesiology and next pediatrics. She opened Windham's first pediatric practice in 1969.

Dr. Millard was well-known in her community for her tireless dedication to her profession and in making frequent house calls until her retirement in 1981. After her retirement, she again became a full-time student at the University of Southern Maine, earning a degree in theater four years later. When her husband retired in 1988, they moved back to England, but returned summers to their cottage in Maine. Since 2002, Dr. Millard was a resident in Bangor and Orono, ME.

Dr. Millard is predeceased by her husband, Ben, in 1999, and daughter, Bronwyn, in 1974. Surviving are three daughters, Frances, Katherine and Julie; two sons, Max and Peter; and seven grandchildren.

Margaret was a great inspiration to me in the mid-70's.  A wide-open mind
with great discrimination.
