Carl Payne Tobey:
(1902-1980)
©1997 by Naomi Bennett

Carl Payne Tobey Carl Payne Tobey was one of America's prominent astrologers in this century. He was part of the group of astrologers that revived astrology in the 1920's in New York City. He contributed to the American Astrology magazine, Wynn's Astrology magazine and The New York Astrologer in the 1930's and 40's. He was the first breed of astrologers that started to use statistical research into the foundations of the subject.

Grant Lewi and Carl were best friends and associates for years. In the 1950's, Clancy Publications moved to Tucson, Arizona and Lewi was their editor for American Astrology Magazine. He unexpectedly died of a heart attack, so Carl moved to Tucson to help in the transition period after his death.

In 1955 he created a correspondence course to teach the principles that he and others had rediscovered about astrology through 30 years of experience. It is unique from all others and still relevant today. In 1965, he wrote An Astrology Primer for the Millions and from 1969-74 he wrote a nationally syndicated astrology column in the Sunday papers that reached 10 million weekly. In 1973 he wrote Astrology of Inner Space.

I was lucky enough to be Carl's student in 1968 and work with him from 1969-1974. I worked on editing his last book and writing the forward in 1972. Carl's health started failing slowly in 1976, so he moved near his son. He died in San Antonio in 1980 at the age of 78.

BIRTH AND DEATH INFORMATION: AstroDatabank lists the information he gave a student, Diane Clarke, rated A. He was born April 27, 1902, at 10:32 PM EST, in Lynnbrook, NY 73W40; 40N40. He died March 19, 1980, in Tucson, AZ.

TOBEY'S CORRESPONDANCE COURSE AND BOOK SOURCE: Tobey created and administered a correspondence course for years, which is still available from Naomi Bennett. It covers in some depth techniques he was among the first modern-day astrologer to espouse, including the equal house system, planetary nodes, and his secondary chart based on the Arabic Parts. All of his books are long out of print by their publishers but two of his out of print books, Astrology of Inner Space and Carl P. Tobey's Collected Works on Astrology, are also available with the course. For more information on the course and an in-depth portrait of Tobey's contributions, visit Naomi's web site.
