EPHEDRA SINICA (Ma Huang)
Possible applications:
Ma Huang or Ephedra has been used in China since 2800 BC It was used primarily for colds, asthma, hayfever, bronchitis, edema, arthritis, fever, hypotension and hives. Here in the West, we have demonstrated that alkaloid ephedrine works in a number of over-the-counter cold and allergy medications. Potency is based upon the herb's alkaloid content. Side effects include increased blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety. FDA suggest that those with heart (disease or high blood pressure), thyroid, diabetes or prostrate problems may be affected adversely. It should definitely NOT be taken with antihypertensive or antidepressant drugs. Lately the US government has stepped in to tell you that this drug is dangerous when not taken cautiously. In an effort to thwart stupidity, ephedra has been removed from the market.
