Headache

Four chemicals keep the brain in happy-land. These act like brain "opiates". They are serotonin, norepinephrin, endorphins, and prostaglandins. Aspirin (which irritates the stomach) and acetaminophen (which destroys the kidneys) works on the prostaglandins. Most severe headache occurs following a period of high stress. During high stess the vessels in the brain constrict. When the stress is gone, they dilate and the sudden rush of blood seems to trigger the achy response. Some headache can be directly related back to a specific food or odor or time of the month. It is notable that women get more of the headaches than men, suggesting that a hormonal link to headache may eventually be discovered.
