SAW PALMETTO

Possible applications:

This small scrubby palm from the West Indies and Atlantic coast of North America bears berries that have a long folk history of use as an aphrodisiac.   For centuries, the berries have been used in treating conditions of the prostate.  Clinical studies reveal that the fat-soluble extract of saw palmetto berries have shown it improves the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. (BPH).  The berry itself inhibits dihydrotestosterone which will cause prostate cells to multiply excessivly, but additionally, saw palmetto inhibits the binding of that dihydrotestosterone at cellular binding sites and exerts a mild anti-inflammatory effect within the prostate.  Detailed toxicology studies have been carried out on mice, rats and dogs and indicate that the extract has no toxic effect.
