General Information:
- Selenium is a natural antioxidant of polyunsaturates which protects the immune system from free radicals. It works best when taken with vitamin E. Selenium supplements should be carefully monitored because this mineral is toxic and will destroy the liver. Care should be taken to get this mineral through natural food sources like wheat germ. Both sulphur and selenium travel along the same route in the body and will compete with each other if either of these minerals are taken out of proportion.
- Found in garlic, mushrooms, broccoli, onions and tomatoes as well as seafood (tuna), bran and wheat germ and milk and eggs.
- Requirements are non-existent because of the toxicity of this mineral. However recent technology has made this available in supplemental form. Often the mineral is taken in 100 - 200 mcg doses. Usually selenium is included in an antioxidant formula. Deficiencies may be presumed if premature aging appears to be taking place. If this is the case, a doctor should be consulted. There is much to be learned about this mineral. Some studies have noted that areas with higher concentrations of selenium in the soil, show a population with a lower incidence of stroke.
