The WindUp Girl

by Paolo Bacigalupi (born August 6, 1972 in Paonia, Colorado)

Classification: Speculative fiction, ecology, winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and Locus Awards.

One of the best speculative fiction books of the past five years.

You become immersed in a culture very far removed from anything you know, shaded by Asian outlooks and traditions, tinged by a history that is barely described and could easily be your worst nightmare.

The WindUp Girl is created as a toy and plaything. She is despised by humans and abused by her creators then set loose on the streets to fend for herself. This book is in part a parable of the life of a social outcast, someone who does not fit in to society and is therefore badly treated.

It is also a book that raises questions about the dangers of genetically altered foods and potential for manipulation of the food industry for political gain.In the future alternative world created by thus author all foods are controlled by major corporations and corporate espionage can be traced to your kitchen table.
Great characters, an atmospheric, exotic setting and a dialog of acutely aware social consciousness which has been raised to a terrifying level.

It is a book that makes you think and a good story as well.
This book was good enough to read other books by Bacigalupi. The Water Knife explores the politics of water set in what might be the near future. The book makes you think about what could happen if the wrong people controlled access to water and the impact of politics on the ecology. It is a highly recommended read.
