VALERIAN
Possible applications:
Infection
Insomnia
A perennial North American and European plant which has been widely used
in folk medicine as a sedative. Recent studies have verified its ability
to imporve sleep quality and relieve insomnia. In a large double-blind
study, an extract of valerian root improved the subjective ratings for sleep
quality and sleep latency but left no hangover the next morning. In
a follow up study it was shown to be as effective as benzodiazepines without
the side effect of morning sleepiness that was found with usage of the
benzodiazepines. It is regarded as safe by the US FDA. If morning
sleepiness occurs, reduce the dosage. If initial doses of valerian
are unsuccessful, try to eliminate other factors such as caffeine and alcohol
which can disrupt sleep prior to taking the valerian.
