Zinc
General Information:

  • Recently, studies have shown that zinc cold lozenges seem to provide a more effective means for keeping the common cold away. Zinc is a key part of the thymulin molecule which enables the T-cells (body's defense against invaders) to mature.
  • Additionally, zinc is involved in cell layers of the retina. Since low levels of zinc in the body are common in those with macular degeneration, it is believed that zinc deficiency leads to vision difficulties.
  • Watch out smokers! Smoke gets in the eyes and further complicates the visual difficulty which normally comes with old age. Get plenty of zinc!
  • Found in meat, poultry, oysters, green peas, lentils, and fortified cereals.
  • Requirements are 15 - 50 mg per day.
